cake decorating
I've got some people interested in learning cake decorating so I'm going to start a little class. I will be doing it on Wednesday's from about 6-8, after dinner. My husband will be here with kids if you need to bring them, they can either stay in the playroom or turn on a movie. You will need to have a cake and frosting. If you have supplies bring them too, if not you can use mine. You can find fosting recipes on wilton.com, it's best to use the buttercream recipes to start out with. I will tech what I can and hope we all have fun. Send me a private message if you plan on coming and I can give you more details. Hope to see you all.
Re: cake decorating
We're not planning on starting this week, are we? With Thanksgiving so close, I don't think so. But we might want to clarify WHEN we will be starting...

Re: cake decorating
Sorry, I guess I should be more clear. We can start next week if everybody is ready to. That would be Dec 3 I think.
Re: cake decorating
I'm game for it! So it would be the same day as the play date? Maybe we could just roll the two into one next week. Also are you charging anything?
Re: cake decorating
Cake decorating will start tomorrow at 6:00 pm. We will start with the basics of icing a cake and borders and writing.
Need to Bring:
two layers of cake, if you don't do homemade I would suggest Duncan Hines
two recipes of frosting
extra powdered sugar
any tools you may have
plastic placemat-for practicing, just a cheap one that can wash easily
Frosting recipe:
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1 tsp clear vanilla extract
4 cups powdered sugar
2 tbls milk or water
mix until smooth, consistency will be thicker but I will show you how to change it to ice cake and to use for different decorating techniques.
If you want to use 1 cup of shortening instead of butter you can, it tastes good and that is what I do because it helps keep the icing white.
This is a good recipe to learn with and when you learn the consistancies and techniques you can experiment with other recipes.
If you don't have any tools you can use mine until you are ready to invest. If you want to buy some, I would suggest you start with one of the Wilton decorating sets, it somes with the basics to start out with and there not a lot of money.
Send me a pm for my address if you want to come. Hope to see you there.

If anyone does want to purchase their own tools, Michaels sells the Wilton kits. The first one is like $25 (I used to work there), but you can use their coupons on the kits. I have a coupon they just emailed me for 40% off - if anyone wants me to email it to them, let me know!! I'm more than willing to share!

Re: cake decorating
Sorry I didn't make it last night. My husband wasn't feeling good and needed me to stay home.
Re: cake decorating
Idon't know that Wednesday nights are going to work for me, or atleast not at 6. We have a standing appointment every Wednesday at 7:30 - so I'd only be able to come for like an hour. I thought I could make it work, but I just don't think I'll be able to join you ladies. I'm sorry

Re: cake decorating
Nobody was able to make it last night, so if there is something else that would work better let me know. I can do Wed after 5, anytime Fridays, and Saturdays after 6. Those are the best times for my husband to be home with my kids. It really doesn't matter to me when we do it so let me know what would work out for you guys. Thanks.
Re: cake decorating
Just wondering if anyone is still interested in cake decorating. I'm still planning on Wednesday's unless something else is going to workout better. If you are not interested right now, just let me know so I don't plan on it.
Re: cake decorating
Since Adelina will be gone all of December maybe we should wait until January to start?
Also it's hard to go out twice in the same day, so maybe you could do the cake class on the weeks you don't do a playdate?

Re: cake decorating
That's fine with me. We can do every other week on playgroup and cakes. If you just want to do it at 11:00 for both that's fine too. I know Miranda can't come at night so if you want to try it during the day with the kids running around that's fine. If you want to wait to do cakes until Adelina comes back we can wait for that too. We can just do lunch-playgroup the rest of December and start cakes in January. Which would make a playgroup for next Wednesday. Everybody give me your input if this is going to be okay.
Re: cake decorating
I like the every other week idea too. I could do Wednesday nights if we did it a little earlier...so I coud be done by about 7. But I'm also willing to try during the day too! Maybe we could try that and if it's too much we can try finding another night? I also think waiting til January would be good...that way Adelina doesn't have to try and play catch-up.

Re: cake decorating
You guys are so nice for thinking of me! Every other week is good for me. I come back Jan 1st and willl most likely be free after that. Have a Happy Holiday Season everyone~!
Re: cake decorating
Let's plan on every other Wednesday at 11 for play group and then every other for cakes. We'll try with the kids and if it doesn't work than maybe we can move the day. We can start with cakes in January but I would still like to do playgroup this month. So we would have playgroup on the 17th and 31st and then start with cakes on Jan 7 and start the switching then. Thanks everyone for your input. I hope this will workout for everyone.
